Stepping Outside of Your Comfort Zone

Please note: The So Suzy Podcast is now Your Creative Focus and can be found on our new website here.

There is a happy little place in all our hearts that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.  We feel safe.  Possibly mildly confident in our complacency.  No fears of failure.  Just happy contentment.  This is also referred to as stagnant or perhaps you would prefer comfort zone, because it sounds happier.  And truly, finding and having a happy place or comfort zone, can be quite wonderful.

However, if you never leave that place of safety, will you ever grow?  Will you ever find true excitement or happiness? By challenging yourself or taking risks, you push yourself to learn, grow, become more successful and more confident.  Sure, you may find failure along the way, but without failure, do you ever really learn how to become a better you?

Welcome to Made It Happen Monday with Simply Charming Everyday! Before we get to our interview, we have some exciting news to tell you about over on our NEW site!!  Please head on over and check it out.  You can even listen to the podcast on our new home.  =)

Tomorrow, we will be rolling out a special podcast episode explaining all of our changes and the why behind them.  (Which is truly EXCITING, if I do say so myself.)  In the interim, feel free to check out the new site, wander through our pages, see some of the cool features we are going to be rolling out and follow us on our new social media sites. As for right now, what do you say we dive into our latest guest and her story on how she Made It Happen!

Meet Denise Nichols

Denise is the owner, maker and designer for Simply Charming Bags.  These hand sewn beauties hold everything from your latest crafting project, to your MISTI collection and so much more.  Since the age of 10, she has been sewing doll clothes, dresses, quilts, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, Prom dresses and most recently her famous Bunkie Bags and MISTI Zip Pouches.  Hear about how she got her start, the bags she designs and the new products she has lined up for 2017.

How a Jar of Spaghetti Sauce Can Inspire a Bunkie Business

It has happened to all of us at one time or another, our hands are full, the plastic bags are overloaded with heavy cans and jars and at the worst possible moment, the bottom gives out and your food scatters, rolls and shatters.  Personally, my focus would have been on the fact I had red sauce all of the side of my brand new white car.  However, Denise focused on HOW to make sure it would never happen again. Hear how a spaghetti sauce parking lot massacre inspired the Bunkie Bag!

Preparing Your Go Bag

Being prepared for an emergency situation is so important, especially when that emergency is an impromptu card class or a last minute girls get-a-way weekend.  Which is why having your crafty "go" bag always prepared is essential for your well being!

On today's podcast, we discuss what a "go" bag is, what to use for your "go" bag and items to include.  Plus, we discuss the key elements to take into consideration when you are either planning or attending a class or retreat.

Top 5 Items to Include per our special Facebook Group

  1. Adhesive
  2. Scissors
  3. MISTI
  4. Paper Cutter
  5. Foam Tape

When Planning a Retreat or Class, Keep These Things in Mind
  • If travel is involved, supply all sharp items; scissors, paper cutter, craft knife, etc.
  • Do not require big and bulky items that attendees may have to put into checked luggage
  • Let attendees know what you will be providing so they can plan accordingly

When Attending a Retreat or Class, Keep These Things in Mind
  • Your space will be about the size of placemat, do not overdo it
  • Use a Purse Hook to hang your bag from the table
  • Bring your Mini MISTI versus your Original
  • If using a MISTI, replace the stamp to the original acrylic block and make sure it's straight
  • Be prepared to share
  • Label all of your supplies
  • Do not bring valuable or sacred items
  • Be responsible for your items

My recommended "go" bag supply list for card makers

WINNER! Stamp AnnieThing Gift Certificates

First, let me apologize for being late with our winner announcement for the (2) $25 Gift Certificate to Stamp AnnieThing from our Made It Happen Monday podcast.  I left to go to Arizona to visit my family for Mother's Day and completely forgot to post, plus it was the first time I went without a computer.  I can tell you that I was going through some serious withdrawals!

However, let's get to the fun part of our post and the winners of the $25 Gift Certificates.

Congratulations, Kathy Klersy and MiamiKel!  Please contact Annie via her Contact Us form and let her know that you won the $25 Gift Certificate to her store!

Let's see what their favorite StampAnnieThing stamps were, shall we?

MiamiKel's favorite was Kelly Book

And Kathy couldn't decide between two of them so we are including both!  Audrina and Annie!

Thank you to everyone who left Annie some love on her podcast and became absolutely smitten with her Chibi Kids.  If you ended up picking up a couple of stamps, please share which ones you brought home in the comments.

Habits and Accountability: Take Time for Yourself

Whatever habit you create for yourself, it’s up to you to decide you’re worth it and to take the time you need.  Life is too short and there are a ton of fabulous projects to work on, hobbies to learn and art to create.

Today's podcast is sponsored by My Sweet Petunia and the amazing MISTI.

There are only so many hours in a day and the time we do get to take for ourselves is precious.  It’s nice to know that we do find that “me” time, it’s not wasted with ruined cards because the ink didn’t distribute evenly.  And having that MISTI will make sure every card is beautifully stamped, regardless if it is one card or 50.  You never know, maybe this is the year I actually send Christmas cards to everyone.

Finding Your Mojo

Since I slammed head first into the blahs, I figured today would be a great time to move our podcast calendar around and bring forth the episode on Losing Your Mojo, because I definitely misplaced mine.  But, what I want to know is why.

  • Why do we hit these creative walls that stop us dead in our tracks?
  • How can we overcome them?
  • What can we do to find it again?
  • When do we decide to follow our mojo and go on a mini hiatus?

Where do we go to "relax", to take time for ourselves, to be creative?

  • Step out of your creative comfort zone
  • Check out Kelly Creates Brush Lettering Practice Sheets
  • Join one of the coloring classes at Kit and Clowder
  • Do simple chores around the house
  • Re-introduce yourself to some of the projects you haven't seen in a while
If you aren't feeling the desire to craft, plan for when you are.
  • Organize
  • Clean
  • Plan
CASE some of our favorite cards.  Mindless work is a nice way to be "doing" without the stress of "creating" something new.

Check out Justine's video for making Bulk Thank You Cards using the MISTI.

When you get into that nasty rut of life, remind yourself it's probably your brain telling you to take a break.  Don't ignore it.
  • Step back
  • Do something different
  • Recharge yourself
  • Relax
  • Organize
  • Clean
  • Plan
